Between Mountains and Desert: The Soul of Southern Morocco

Departing from Marrakech, this journey immerses you in the landscapes of the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara. Cross the High Atlas via the Tichka Pass and visit the iconic Ksar of Aït Ben Haddou before continuing to the Drâa Valley and the desert gateway. With a camel caravan team, trek through Djebel Bani’s wild terrain—canyons, oases, plateaus, and golden dunes—camping under star-filled skies. The route reveals the desert’s full diversity, from rocky landscapes to vast ergs. The journey concludes with a return to Marrakech and time to explore the medina, blending adventure, culture, and discovery.

THE JOURNEY

Day 1 : MONTREAL – MARRAKECH
Participants meet at Montréal–Trudeau International Airport for departure to Marrakech.

Overnight flight with meals served on board.
Day 2 : MARRAKECH – AIT BENHADOU – OUARZAZATE
Arrival in Marrakech, where you will be welcomed by your local guide before heading to the south. The journey takes you over the Tichka Pass (2,260 m) across the High Atlas Mountains, then through Telouet and the Ounila Valley. Lunch is served en route, followed by a visit to the famous Ksar of Aït Ben Haddou (approximately 1 hour). We then continue by road to Ouarzazate. Dinner and overnight stay in a guesthouse in Ouarzazate.

Approximate driving time: 4.5 hours (with scheduled stops) / Approximate walking time: 1 to 2 hours of sightseeing on foot.
Day 3 : OUARZAZATE – ADGZ -ZAGORA – AFERDOU
Breakfast at your accommodation before setting out by minibus through the scenic Drâa Valley toward Zagora, where our camel team awaits. After a picnic lunch at the foot of Djebel Bani, we begin our trek with a gentle ascent to a 1,100 m pass. From the summit, we take in sweeping views over a vast, rugged desert mountain landscape. We then descend toward the edge of the Aferdou Oasis, where we set up our bivouac for the night. Overnight in a desert camp under the stars.

Distance: 9 km / Approximate walking time: 3 hours.
Day 4 : AFERDOU – DJEBEL BANI
Breakfast at the campsite before descending the canyon of Oued Mhasser. Along the way, the gueltas (natural rock pools) and dramatic mineral formations create a striking and unforgettable landscape. We continue to the base of the Djebel Bani range, setting up camp just before the sand dunes. Overnight in a desert bivouac under the stars.

Distance: 18 km / Approximate walking time: 6 hours.
Day 5 : DJEBEL BANI – MSSIOUA DUNE – ERG EL AABIDLIYA
Breakfast at the campsite, followed by the start of today’s hike across a vast rocky desert plateau (reg). We then continue on toward the dunes of Mssioua and El Aabidliya, gradually transitioning from stone desert to sand. Upon arrival, we set up our bivouac near the dunes and settle in for the night under the desert sky.

Distance: 20 km / Approximate walking time: 6.5 hours.
Day 6 : MSSIOUA DUNE – D’ERG EL GHOUL DUNE
Breakfast at the campsite. We hike across rolling dunes with the Djebel Bani mountains rising to the north, and the vast Drâa Hamada desert plateau stretching south toward the Algerian border. We set up camp near the dunes of Erg El Ghoul and spend the night under the stars in a remote desert bivouac.

Distance: 16 km / Approximate walking time: 5 hours.
Day 7: D’ERG EL GHOUL DUNE – MARRAKECH
After breakfast, the vehicles will meet us at the campsite. We will set off on a 2-hour off-road drive toward Foum Zguid. We then continue north, crossing the Tichka Pass (2,260 m) through the Atlas Mountains, before arriving in Marrakech late in the day. Dinner and overnight stay in a hotel or riad in Marrakech.

Approximate driving time: 7 hours (with scheduled stops).
Day 8: MARRAKECH
Breakfast at your accommodation, followed by a half-day guided tour of the old city of Marrakech with your local guide. Discover the vibrant medina, including the esplanade and minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque, the Kasbah district, the Jewish quarter, and the Bahia Palace. Stroll through the historic alleys of the medina and conclude at Jemaa el-Fnaa for lunch. Free afternoon to relax or explore at your own pace before gathering for a farewell dinner. Overnight in a hotel or riad.

Day 9: MARRAKECH – MONTREAL
Transfer to the airport and check-in for your return flight to Montréal. Arrival on the same day.
