A Routine Check-up that Makes All the Difference
“Cancer research is essential. Without it, my cancer might have gone undiagnosed, and I wouldn’t have had access to the treatments that saved my life.” HELEN THOMPSON, TOUCHED BY BREAST CANCER
August 2023: a Routine Check-up
In August 2023, during her routine mammogram, an exam she undergoes every two years, her life changed dramatically. Having lost both of her sisters to lung cancer, likely caused by their tobacco use, she sincerely thought she was safe thanks to her healthy lifestyle. Cancer was something that happened to others.
And then, her life changed…
Just two days after her exam, she received a worrying call: something had been detected, and an ultrasound was needed. She recalls that at that moment, her heart jumped. Then a biopsy revealed a 1.3-centimeter mass in her left breast.
Two months later, she underwent surgery. Thanks to the advances made possible by research and the expertise of the medical teams, she received quick and effective care.
“When I think about the progress that has been made, I feel lucky. Fifty years ago, I might not have had this chance. Cancer research is essential. Without it, my cancer might have gone undiagnosed, and I wouldn’t have had access to the treatments that saved my life.”
