Preventing Cancer from Spreading
Metastases are responsible for the majority of cancer-related deaths. They occur when cancer cells leave the original tumor, travel through the bloodstream, and settle in other organs. However, the mechanisms that allow them to survive and spread are still not well understood.
Cutting Off the Path for Metastases
Researcher Calvin Roskelley and his team are studying a key mechanism in cancer progression: the ability of circulating cancer cells to cluster together. These clusters increase their chances of surviving in the bloodstream, resisting treatments, and forming new tumors elsewhere in the body.
To counter this process, the team has developed antibodies capable of recognizing a protein present on the surface of cancer cells. By blocking this protein, the researchers hope to prevent the cells from clustering together, reduce their ability to form metastases, and make them more vulnerable to treatments.
The project will evaluate the effectiveness of these antibodies in several types of cancer, including breast, pancreatic, and ovarian cancers. Ultimately, this approach could lead to a new therapeutic strategy aimed at slowing the spread of cancer before metastases are even able to establish themselves.
The Cancer Research Society (CRS) enabled me to launch innovative research projects where other organizations might not have taken the risk. This preliminary work paved the way for concrete advances, and now we are seeing the results take shape, all for the benefit of patients.
