August 2023 : a routine exam

In August 2023, during my routine mammogram—a check-up I get every two years—my life took an unexpected turn. Having lost both of my sisters to lung cancer, likely due to smoking , I thought I was safe thanks to my healthy lifestyle. Cancer, I thought, was something that happened to others.

Then, my life took an unexpected turn

But two days after my exam, I received a concerning call: something had been detected, and I needed to get an ultrasound. My heart stopped in that moment. Then a biopsy revealed a 1.3 cm mass in my left breast.

Two months later, I underwent surgery. Thanks to research advancements and the expertise of medical teams, I received fast and effective care. When I think of all the progress made, I feel incredibly fortunate. Fifty years ago, I might not have had this chance.

Cancer research is essential. Without it, my cancer might have gone undiagnosed, and I wouldn’t have had access to the treatments that saved me. Today, I encourage everyone to support research. Every donation, even a modest one, contributes to developing diagnostic tools and treatments that save lives.
