CCS/CIHR-ICR Initiative in Primary Cancer Prevention: 28 Grants Offered, Totalling $5.4 Million

The Cancer Research Society (CRS) is pleased to share the results of the Primary Cancer Prevention competition which was launched in June of 2021. In total, 28 grants valued at $5.4 million were awarded through the competition organized by the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS), Canadian Institutes of Health Research’s Institute of Cancer Research (CIHR-ICR) in partnership with the Cancer Research Society,, Canadian Institutes of Health Research’s Institute of Aboriginal Peoples’ Health (CIHR-IAPH), Alberta Health, BC Cancer Foundation, CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation and the Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation. The Cancer Research Society is proud to co-fund 4 of these cancer prevention research projects, the details of which are listed here.

We estimate that 4 out of 10 cancers can be prevented. The 28 research projects selected, in 8 Canadian provinces, aim to implement innovative and novel interventions that have the potential to truly contribute to cancer prevention.

“Through these grants we will truly help limit people’s exposure to known risks while promoting a healthier lifestyle as a means of preventing cancer. At the same time, we will have a positive impact on public health policies that echo these objectives.”
– Dajan O’Donnell, PhD, Director of Scientific Affairs and Partnerships, Cancer Research Society

The CRS would like to thank the 21 scientific experts, as well as the 9 patients, cancer survivors and caregivers who took part in the project selection committees. Your contribution helps us shape the future of research in Canada.
