Read for the Cure Virtual Event Series raises over $105 000 for the Cancer Research Society’s Environment-Cancer FundMC

Montreal, November 27, 2020 — The Cancer Research Society (The Society) announced that its 2020 Read for the Cure event series – presented virtually this year – has raised over $105 000 (net) for its Environment-Cancer FundMC. This event is a unique annual fundraiser that brings together celebrated authors to talk about their recent work, writing process, and –often–their own personal cancer stories, in support of a great cause.

Presented by Penguin Random House Canada and now in its 13th year, Read for the Cure has raised over $1.7 million for cancer research since its inception in 2007 with the support of thousands of participants, donors and corporate partners across Canada. All funds raised by the Read for the Cure events are invested in the Cancer Research Society’s Environment-Cancer FundMC, which allows funding promising research projects studying the environmental causes of cancer.

“This year, our Read for the Cure events were completely virtual for the first time and we are very happy and grateful for the loyal support and generosity of our participants, donors, partners, emcees and authors, who allow us to pursue our mission to outsmart cancer,” said Manon Pepin, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Cancer Research Society. Thanks to dedicated corporate partners across Canada and volunteer committees in Ottawa, Vancouver, Victoria, Toronto, and Montreal, five events took place this fall featuring:

  • Samra Habib, Sean Michaels and Anita Rau Badami in conversation with CBC’s Lucy van Oldenbarneveld
  • Cherie Dimaline, Lara Prescott, and Ian Williams in conversation with CTV’s Mi-Jung Lee
  • Lorna Crozier, Aislinn Hunter, and Steven Price in conversation with CBC’s Gregor Craigie
  • Robyn Doolittle, Sean Michaels, and Emma Straub in conversation with Johanna Schneller
  • Jean-Philippe Cyr, Meredith Erickson, and Mandy & Rebecca Wolfe in conversation with CBC’s Debra Arbec
