A testament to the power of cancer research

My journey illustrates the life-saving impact of cancer research. Diagnosed with breast cancer at 39, and later facing an aggressive recurrence, I found hope again in 2013 thanks to the Cleopatra study, which granted me access to a groundbreaking therapy. Now in remission after 188 treatments, I cherish every precious moment with my children and grandchildren — milestones I once feared I might miss. Deeply grateful, I am committed to supporting other patients and raising awareness about the importance of research funding and donors. I believe that my life and every step I take are made possible thanks to those who support this vital cause.

Heather Ross - Affected by breast cancer

My journey is one of resilience and hope—a testament to the life-changing power of cancer research. I was diagnosed with breast cancer at just 39, and I faced the disease head-on. I went through surgery, radiation, and many rounds of medications and hormone therapy, determined to keep moving forward. But twelve years later, my world changed once again when my cancer returned, this time more aggressive and metastatic.

In 2013, my life took a transformative turn when I became eligible for the groundbreaking Cleopatra study. Thanks to this breakthrough, I was able to access a combination therapy that has kept my cancer at bay. Now, 188 treatments later, I’m in remission and cherish each precious day with my husband, Don, children and grandchildren, milestones I once feared I might miss. My doctors call me an “outlier,” an extraordinary case where research provided hope and time that once seemed impossible.

Rediscover the little joys of life

But my experience goes beyond survival; it’s about reclaiming life with renewed purpose. Cancer may have left scars, but it also strengthened my spirit and reminded me of what truly matters. I treasure the little moments—the laughter of my grandchildren, family dinners, and the milestones I never thought I’d see. Every day, I honor the gift of time that research has given me, and I choose to support other patients, offering words of encouragement and sharing my story with those just beginning their journey.

Cancer Research Gives Hope

My story is a testament to the profound impact of cancer research. Each breakthrough, each study, and every dollar raised provides real hope for families and patients like me. It’s this research that has kept me here, feeling well and surrounded by loved ones. The Cancer Research Society and its partners are essential to making stories like mine possible and helping us outsmart cancer for countless others.

My Story as a Legacy

Don and I are deeply grateful to the incredible doctors, nurses, and technicians we’ve encountered over the past 25 years, who have been on the front lines, transforming research into reality. Their dedication has been invaluable to my journey and my health.

I often reflect on the idea of legacy. I know my story wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of donors and the dedication of researchers, and I hope that sharing my experience inspires others to give.

I’m living proof that cancer research saves lives. Every day I have, every milestone I reach, is thanks to people who believed in this cause.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Heather
