JUNE 1ST, 2018
Thursday May 31st, marked the 5th anniversary of the Urban BBQ, the Cancer Research Society’s most important fundraising event, presented by RBC Royal Bank. With Argentina as its main theme, the Urban BBQ raised a net amount of over half a million dollars to support cancer research in Canada, with a record-breaking attendance of more than 1,000 guests. These guests from Montreal’s business community gathered at Windsor Station for a delicious asado, a gourmet BBQ inspired by Argentinian cuisine, created by guest chef Ricardo Larrivée and prepared by chef Marc-André Jetté and his team. Stéphane Rousseau, spokesperson for the Cancer Research Society, acted as emcee with Ricardo, to ensure a colorful atmosphere. From an exceptional auction, to artistic performances and quality networking, the stage was set for this special edition!
Since the beginning of the Urban BBQ, thousands of participants and corporate partners have raised more than $ 2 million for cancer research. “In just five years, the Cancer Research Society’s Urban BBQ has become an annual rendez-vous for hundreds of Montreal business people. This incredible mobilization of the business community towards the cause allows us to make giant strides in the funding of cancer research, which remains essential as we hope to one day outsmart cancer,” mentions Martin Thibodeau, Regional President, British Columbia, RBC Royal Bank; Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Cancer Research Society and Honorary Co-Chair of the 5th Urban BBQ.
Because of its complexity, cancer is difficult to grasp and remains the leading cause of death in the country. The generous contribution of partners and donors is therefore essential to allow Canada’s top researchers to pursue their work. “Whether it be friends, colleagues, or members of our own family, we are all confronted with this terrible disease, sooner or later. But together, we can make a difference and give them hope. That’s why RBC Royal Bank is proud to continue its commitment to the Urban BBQ, which allows us to work together to support cancer research,” explains Nadine Renaud-Tinker, President, Quebec Headquarters, RBC Royal Bank and Honorary Co-Chair of the 5th Urban BBQ.
The funds raised by the Urban BBQ help the Society to fund hundreds of the most promising research projects in the country each year. “In line with the tremendous momentum achieved by our organization in 2018, both in terms of growing research dollars and launching new programs to maximize our impact on the disease, the Urban BBQ reflects the growing commitment of our donors, partners and countless volunteers. It’s amazing what we accomplished today thanks to their support,” says Max Fehlmann, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Cancer Research Society.
