50 Doctoral Research Awards: Supporting the Future of Cancer Research

November 4, 2025 — The Cancer Research Society (CRS) is proud to announce the awarding of 50 Doctoral Research Awards to students from across the country. This record number of scholarships will allow recipients to fully dedicate themselves to research projects aimed at improving cancer prevention, detection, and treatment.

Crucial Support for Students

Launched in 2023, this program aims to provide doctoral students with the resources they need to carry out their research projects and advance in their academic and scientific careers. This year, the Cancer Research Society (CRS) received nearly 250 applications, an impressive number that highlights the urgent need for funding to support the future of research. Among them, 50 doctoral students were selected to receive a $70,000 scholarship over two years, a record that reflects the program’s growing reach.

The selected projects were evaluated by a committee of scientific experts using rigorous criteria: relevance, innovation, feasibility, and potential impact. The recipients stand out for the excellence of their proposals and their ability to generate tangible progress in cancer research.

A Comprehensive Strategy for Lasting Impact

The Doctoral Research Awards program is part of a broader strategy that supports researchers at every stage of their careers through our three annual funding programs. In 2025, these efforts reached a historic milestone, with 157 grants awarded, representing a total investment of $18.3 million over three years. This figure reflects CRS’s ongoing commitment to advancing research to outsmart cancer.

Thanks to Our Partners and Donors

The success of this edition, marked by a record 50 scholarships, would not have been possible without the generous support of our partners and donors.  CRS would like to extend special thanks to the CIHR Institute of Cancer Research, Brain Canada Foundation, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada, RBC Royal Bank, and Ovarian Cancer Canada, who contribute to co-funding several of these scholarships.  Thanks to their commitment, young researchers can pursue bold, hopeful projects that bring new possibilities to those affected by cancer.
